The marriage of Google and Motorola Mobility may just be the best shotgun wedding, ever! Continue reading →

Wow! It seems like just yesterday I was coddling and hugging my #RAZR! How fast you grew up! And look at the dowry provided – 17,000 patents with 7,000 pending! (That is the equivalent to over 100 goats, 52 sheep, and an Australian Shepherd – in many cultures!) 62% premium on stock value! WOWZA!

Regardless, a sister company couldn’t ask for more from a siblings marriage. Google will provide Motorola Mobility deep resources, an almost Apple like – “Walled Garden”, and Google will gain a great mobile portfolio that will fend off the patent gremlins for sometime to come…

So what about those that Google has also been “dating” – Samsung, HTC, etc… They did NOT get a rose this morning! I would suggest a good relationship counselor – and then I’d book flights to Redmond, WA. I am certain that Mr. Balmer has never really gotten over either of you!

With this one nuptial – the entire mobility industry has changed – and there’s so much more to come! Again, best to you Motorola Mobility – I wish you, your technology, and your employee’s – the very best! (P.S. – Are you tying the knot in Vegas – or will this be another “Royal” wedding?)

BYOWifi: Have WiFi – Will Travel with the Mobile HotSpot

Ever been at an airport that doesn’t have WiFi when you need to receive or send an urgent file? Experienced the sticker shock after accessing WiFi at a high-end business hotel – only to be informed you’ll “only” be charged $14.95 a day for the privilege? If you have experienced these situations – and want to avoid them in the future — you may need a Mobile HotSpot.

With a personal Mobile HotSpot, you can send pictures to family and friends seconds after you’ve taken them – they can also be transferred to your personal cloud account for storage and backup. All without any intervention or cable connections to a computer. Mobile HotSpot devices are available from today’s next generation carriers. These small — slightly larger than the width of 4-5 credit cards stacked– miracle workers of connectivity allow WiFi connections to any enabled device by leveraging their cellular highspeed 3G and 4G connectivity capabilities. These Lilliputian powerhouses support multiple WiFi users – up to seven simultaneously – and allow connectivity of your phone, tablet, or notebook computer – wherever you might be – near an AC power outlet or not – since most run for hours on user replaceable batteries. <del datetime="2011-04-27T17:17"> </del>

One benefit for many needing wireless connectivity away from the office is the simplicity of connection with a HotSpot. No USB, micro-USB, or proprietary connecting cable is required. Turn on the HotSpot and your device will “see” the device as just another WiFi connection point.

A few of today’s smartphones have HotSpot capability – but these can only be accessed by having additional data plans that often exceed separate plan costs.

Another advantage to a Mobile HotSpot is that you can find a carrier that has stronger coverage in areas where you spend the most time – rather than having to use the same carrier you do in your home or on your mobile phone.

A new trend in leveraging the power of Mobile HotSpots is using them in your home to provide your Internet broadband connection. Often, the costs of many cable internet providers are higher in monthly fees than HotSpot usage agreements. (VirginMobile offers a monthly Unlimited Data plan for $50.00 – No Contract.)

The HotSpot brings us closer to wireless ubiquity and saves not only our wallets but our nerves as well.<ins cite="mailto:Mesenbrink%20Jennifer-VNX843" datetime="2011-04-27T17:19"></ins>

Goldilocks and Enterprise Mobility – All must be Just Right.

Yes, Goldilocks and the Enterprise. Who knew? There’s more correlation then any of us imagined. Recall the story, Goldilocks finds perfection in a chair, a bed, and in soup. But – only after some very specific criteria were met. Does this remind you of the quest that enterprise conducts – daily – to find the perfect Mobility Solutions? It should.

Today’s IT business leaders are faced with many choices for enterprise mobility – and the unintended consequences of others making mobility choices for them. Consumer grade products proliferate organizations in a more then one-to-one deluge. Some of them, work great for personal use and “light business purpose”. (E-Mail, texting, etc…). However, an enterprise has more to do to then make an occasional phone call and text to friends what club you wish them to find.

Today’s enterprise is complex. Many different functions must be interconnected. A manufacturer has to give timely just in time data to parts suppliers. The warehouse must communicate to the truck driver. The regional manager needs to send pictures of the latest products headed to her stores.

All of these purposes are specific. Different devices are required to complete these mission critical tasks. The work done be a business today depends on people with specific expertise – they require mobility tools that fit the business – not just the personal lives of their employees.

A rugged device that can be used for years – after being dropped on concrete repeatedly and still scan barcodes is demanded in the warehouse. On the retail floor a 7” screen is necessary to show a customer other colors or features, or user reviews for a specific product. A shipping expediter needs a mobile computer who’s screen can be read inside or outside in a storage yard. And for certain, none of these valuable personnel can accomplish their mission with a mobile computer that stops functioning when the temperature is above 95F or below 32F.

Different tasks require different mobile computing tools. Just like Goldilocks, a mobile solution for today’s enterprise has to be just right. It must not fail when it’s too cold or too hot. It must offer rugged reliability that is neither too firm or too soft. It must offer choices in screen size and form factor – it must have the right OS platform and software solutions for the task at hand.

Yes, Enterprise Mobility Solutions will only work if they are Just Right!

(..just lookout for the bears!)

Next Gen Enterprise - Secret Sauce

Today’s carriers offer unprecedented high-speed connectivity and ubiquitous high-speed networks connecting our business and personal devices. With the next generation of wireless connectivity, we will be able to connect every device in our homes and businesses in ways not previously imagined. And through cloud based storage, this information will be accessible and adaptable to countless business and personal needs.

Tomorrow’s series of connected moments will become something more than just mobile enterprise applications. Consider these scenarios:

A rural doctor gets a text message that one of their patients is having issues breathing – sent from that patient’s watch, which also functions as a blood pressure monitor. An ambulance is dispatched automatically to the patient’s address and the doctor arrives at the hospital – ahead of the ambulance.

Smart, enabled wireless infrastructure and embedded communication modules will alert a field service worker that an electrical transformer is in need of a replacement – prior to failure. A copier repairman will know when his customers in a given area are low on supplies or need required maintenance – prior to running out of toner and paper.

A homeowner will be notified that her smoke alarm battery is ready to fail – and informed if one is available at the local hardware store on the way home from work. If not, she can order one for next day delivery. This will trigger the inventory systems of the hardware store and send re-order signals to their battery distributor.

Smart appliances will tell us if we are out of commonly used staples – and reorder them automatically. No need to memorize the date on the milk carton – our refrigerators will scan them and alert us that we need to dispose of the old, and that a new gallon of milk is ready for delivery at our convenience, after looking at our calendars and finding the most convenient time for the next grocery delivery.

All of these scenarios are enabled by next generation carriers – high speed wireless networks that connect – and improve our lives and businesses.

Yes, the suave and debonaire Don Draper – man of mystery and advertising genius in the hit show MadMen, reflects the times – and vice versa. The series started off with brilliant upbeat snapshots of the crazy early 1960′s when the world was full of hope and aspiration. But now, although still worth a huge nostalgic smile, the brash exuberance is dimming ever so slightly – after all, the man – Don Draper- who had women swooning and throwing themselves at him is now reduced to paying a hooker – on Thanksgiving – no less, for her company. (Just few metaphors there, eh?)

So if MadMen, offers an albeit slightly skewed view of the 1960′s, what would the affluent captains of free society in 2010 reflect upon? I submit that we could call a series based in the early 2000′s, SadMen.

Not to again pick on the beleaguered former leader of BP, but just look at this snapshot – does he look happy? Does he look like the leader of one of the most successful and profitable companies in the world? Or how about Aikido Toyoda, President of Toyota – does look like he is at his own birthday party?

These famous leaders, sports gods, and politico’s, and many others, are facing extremely challenging times and circumstances – and it looks as if the early 2000′s will be best described as a “character building time” for many. As the famous Seinfeld show reminded us, “… not that there’s anything wrong with that….” .

After all, does history not show us that challenging times create incredible opportunities for individuals and societies? Look at the United States after the great depression, or Omorosa after The Apprentice. (Perhaps the latter was bad example… )

And now, joining the ranks of SadMen, Former CEO of HP, Mark Hurd. Ouch. Ouch as a husband, father, strong CEO – and most personal to me – OUCH as an HP Shareholder.

If there’s a point here, it’s this – If we as a society are today in a more somber place then the highly leveraged and “plasticky” late 90′s and early 2000′s – then that’s a Good Thing! I am a believer in timing – based on the last decade, it seems that all may need a somber time to reflect – on our society, our world, and our selves.

Soon, our SadMen saga will change to a GladMen saga – if we just give ourselves time to reflect on how we got to be ”Sad” in the first place.
